Israel on Monday attacked Evin prison north of Tehran, a powerful symbol of the Iranian government system, in what Israel called its most intense bombardment of the Iranian capital.
Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB released a video showing rescue teams sifting through the rubble of Evin prison and carrying out a person on a stretcher.
The Iranian justice system’s Mizan news agency said urgent measures were being taken to protect the health and safety of inmates.
Evin has been the main prison for political and security detainees, including since the 1979 Iranian revolution, and the site of executions that remain potent symbols for the opposition. It is also the site of several high-profile foreign prisoners.
The Israeli military said Israel had also attacked the command centers of the Revolutionary Guards responsible for internal security in the Tehran area.
